Ratios and direct proportion

The essentials

A ratio compares quantities. Quantities are directly proportional when their ratio remains constant. If y = kx, the constant k tells you how much y corresponds to one unit of x. Check that the physical situation supports a constant rate.
Worked example
If 3 identical components cost $12, each costs $4. At the same unit price, 7 components cost 7 × $4 = $28.
Check your understanding

At a constant rate, a machine makes 12 parts in 3 minutes. How many in 5 minutes?
