Balancing chemical equations

The essentials

A balanced chemical equation has the same number of each type of atom on both sides. Change coefficients before formulas, not the subscripts within a formula. Changing a subscript changes the chemical substance.
Worked example
Hydrogen and oxygen form water: 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O. Both sides contain 4 hydrogen atoms and 2 oxygen atoms.
Check your understanding

In 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O, how many hydrogen atoms are on each side?
